David O'Neil Thompson, born July 13, 1954, is a former professional basketball player who made a significant impact on the sport. He played for the Denver Nuggets of both the American Basketball Association (ABA) and National Basketball Association (NBA).
The "Skywalker"
Thompson, nicknamed "Skywalker," was known for his extraordinary athleticism and high-flying dunks. He was a four-time ABA All-Star and was named the ABA Most Valuable Player in 1976. Thompson's electrifying play helped the Nuggets reach the ABA Finals in 1976 and 1978.
Overcoming Adversity
Despite his on-court success, Thompson's personal life was marred by addiction. Substance abuse took a toll on his physical and mental health, sapping his ability to perform at the same level.
